Sikkim is the second smallest state of India . It is located in the north eastern part of India, but is not a part of the Seven Sister states. The state is famous for dazzling waterfalls, virgin forests, Tibetan style Buddhist Gompas, alpine meadows, rhododendron flowers and more. Kanchenjunga (also Kanchendzonga) at 8598 m is the third highest peak in the world, and lies in Sikkim.

1. Tsomgo lake 

Pronounced Changu, this scenic lake is perched at 3750 m above sea level and lies 40 km away from Gangtok . The drive to Tsomgo Lake is spectacular, and the lake itself is a pristine water body surrounded by wildflowers for most of the year. A particularly mentionable tourist attraction is that visitors can go for yak rides near the periphery of the lake. Tsomgo Lake freezes in the cold winters, but can still be accessed if the road is open.


The best views of the lake are after climbing up a nearby hilltop from where the entire lake is visible.

2. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Situated in the small town of Lachen in Sikkim, the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary attracts wildlife enthusiasts as well as Nature lover alike. The sanctuary is surrounded by the hills of the Himalayan range and the striking beauty of Nature. As the name suggests, the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary will impress you with its large array of different species of the Rhododendron trees. During the season of spring, this fabulous attraction of the park comes to the life and mesmerizes visitors with its unmatched beauty when the flowers sprawled far and wide covering around the 43 sq km area. There are more than 40 different species of the rhododendron trees in this sanctuary, which is the home to some exotic bird species such as hoary-throated barwingand wood snipe. The other species of plants and trees that enhance the lushness of the vegetation of this sanctuary are aconites, potentillas, gentians, primulas, poppies, saxifrages, etc. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is also a popular destination in Sikkim for the trek loving tourists.

 3. Pemayangtse Monastery 

 Pemayangtse Monastery: A 2020 Guide To This Architectural Beauty In Sikkim 

Built for Ta Sangs (pure Tibetian monks) in 1705, this three-storeyed monastery is one of the most renowned in the state of Sikkim. It started with a small shrine called ‘Tsangkhang’, which was founded by Lhatsun Chhenpo . This shrine was later shifted to the present site and re-established in 1705 by Chhogyal Chhagdor Namgyal and Lama Khanchhen Rolpai Dorje . A small religious structure near the entrance has a sacred statue of Dorje Phagmo (Vajra Varahi) that was given to Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal by Terton Terdag Lingpa of Tibet as a gift upon marrying his daughter.

The main festival here is Guru Drakmar chham that is celebrated in winter in the months of February through March. With more than 100 monks at present, the Pemayangtse Monastery is considered to be the parent of all the monasteries following the Mindroling lineage in Sikkim.
